DEPOT DATA
by H. G. "Bea" Hyve
Reprinted from "Crown Jewels of the Wire", February 1994, page 20
Pictured below is Clarence Gordon, my husband Wes' paternal great uncle.
(No, it isn't Inspector Clouseau!) Clarence was a conductor on the Chicago &
North Western Railroad. A few years ago Wes inherited some old family photos,
and we thought that the readers of Crown Jewels might enjoy these.
Irwin
is just southwest of Kankakee, IL. The words on either side of the
"Irwin" sign read:
Bloomington
75-84 Miles |
Chicago
65-29 Miles |
The
white sign at the right end of the depot reads, "American Express
Agency" , and the sign sticking out from the eave says, "Western
Union Telegraph & Cable Office". By the door is "NOTICE!" ,
but the rest is too small to decipher. According to the Kankakee Valley
Genealogy Society, this depot no longer exists.
Anchor is northeast of
Bloomington, IL. The words on either side of the "Anchor" sign read:
Bloomington
26 Miles |
Chicago
85 Miles |
Just below and to the right of the
"Western Union Telegraph Office" sign is another one that reads:
AMERICAN EXPRESS CO.
MONEY ORDERS
FOREIGN DRAFTS
TRAVELLERS CHEQUES
LETTERS
OF CREDIT
TELEGRAPH TRANSFERS
We have been unable to find out if the Anchor depot still stands .
